Virtuoso has created a groundbreaking robotic surgery system with 1 millimeter instruments for rigid endoscopic procedures, offering surgeons unprecedented two-handed control and dexterity at the tip of a rigid endoscope. Their device was recently designated a breakthrough device by FDA for intact removal of bladder tumors after a successful set of first-in-human surgeries. Virtuoso is currently in a clinical stage and preparing for full commercialization in the United States. The Virtuoso system has not approved by the FDA or any other regulatory body and is not for sale.
The East Tennessee Health Innovation Alliance (ETHIA) is a strategic partnership dedicated to advancing health, innovation, and economic growth across Tennessee. By aligning institutional priorities and fostering collaboration, ETHIA works to translate discovery into improved health outcomes for Tennesseans. It brings together research, education, clinical care, and community partnerships into a unified innovative ecosystem.
ETHIA’s vision is to position East Tennessee as a nationally recognized hub for health innovation—distinguished by world-class translational research, impactful partnerships, and measurable improvements in regional health outcomes. This effort is driven by a collaborative network that includes the University of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine Knoxville, UT Medical Center, and other regional health systems. Together, these partners support four affiliated institutes:

- Cancer Wellness Research Institute
- East Tennessee Health Data Trust
- Institute for Behavioral Health, Addiction, & Recovery Systems
ETHIA provides coordinated support to these institutes across five key areas: research, program development, innovation, translation, and partnership and resource development. Guided by shared priorities including access and engagement, innovation and translation, education and outreach, economic impact and workforce development, and policy ETHIA is working to transform health and medical innovation, strengthen Tennessee’s economy, and improve health outcomes for communities across the region.
